Types of Car Transport Trailers and Trucks

The type of car transport you choose will depend on your timeline, budget, and concern over your vehicle being exposed to the elements. There are a few different options available and it is important to consult your transport company on which option works best for you.  It is important to let your auto transporter know for example if there are any special requirements or concerns you have for your car, whether your vehicle is in working condition or not running, because these things can make some transportation methods better than others.

There are two general types of trucks used for car transport service: tractor trailer trucks or a pick-up style truck, called a hotshot. If you are looking for inexpensive vehicle transport, tractor trailers are usually a better choice because they can haul several vehicles at once, but they can be slower and have a hard time navigating residential areas. It may be necessary for you to meet your driver in a terminal or open parking lot to load and unload your car from a tractor trailer.  Hotshot trucks are more expensive, but can deliver your vehicle faster and have an easier time navigating neighborhood streets.

Enclosed vs. Open Trailers

You will also need to decide on whether you want an open or enclosed trailer, whether you use a tractor trailer or a hotshot truck.  Enclosed trailers can cost up to twice as much as the open trailers but they offer complete protection from weather and road elements.

If you decide to ship your car on an open trailer, there are also several types to choose from. Remember, your car will be fully or partially exposed to the elements if you ship on an open trailer.

Multi-car transport trailers vs. Single car trailers: open and flatbed

Multi-car trailers are open trailers that can carry as few as three to as many as twelve vehicles at once. These trailers are the least expensive option, but your car will take longer to be delivered.  Placement on the truck is usually dependant on your scheduled drop off in relation to the other cars.  There are debates about whether your car is better off on the top or bottom rack.  If your car is on the bottom, there is the possibility that oil from cars above will drip down. On the other hand, when trucks pull into areas with trees, it is possible a car stored on the top rack will be hit by branches.

A single car transport trailer is another type of open trailer and are typically used when a car needs to be delivered as quickly as possible.  Single car trailers can be as expensive or even more than enclosed trailers.

If your car is oversized or has been modified, you may need to ship it on a flatbed trailer. The cost of a flatbed trailer will depend on how many other items are on the trailer and how big your car is.
