DOT Rules and Regulations for the Auto Transport Industry
Auto transporters must follow federal regulations when moving goods such as vehicles and providing services across the country. Interstate commerce is regulated by Congress and transportation laws in for trucks and other heavy weight transportation vehicles are regulated under the interstate commerce clause.
1.
The Progress of Auto Transportation: Standards have tightened and regulations are stricter today than ever before for the auto transport industry. The transportation industry has come a long way in the last 2 decades. Today, shippers and receivers can get instant access to the status of their vehicle via the internet. Unlike previous times when the parties had to wait for the arrival of the auto to be announced by the shipping agent. Little information was available between the origin and destination points.
2.
Approval for Hauling Vehicles: All auto transportation trucks must be approved and in compliance for transporting vehicles. Not just any type of truck may be used to haul vehicles from point A to point B.
3.
Weight Requirements: Most roads in the United States have axel weight restrictions and requirements. Auto transporter must abide by these restrictions and make sure the weight of the vehicle complies with the weight requirements of the federal and state departments of transportation.
4.
Weight Inspections: Along an auto transporter’s route, stopping at the roadside weigh stations is a mandatory procedure by law for weight inspection and assessment. The only time a mandatory stop may be waived is if the station is full and directing all traffic to continue to the next station.
5.
Tying Down the Vehicle: Auto transporters are heavily fined if the vehicles they are transporting are not properly tied down. Laws stipulate exactly which chains/securing methods may be used and how tightly the vehicles need to be secured to the moving truck.
6.
Truck Drivers Hours: Until recently, there were no rules regarding how many hours a truck driver could be on the road. Due to accidents from driver exhaustion and lack of sleep, regulations have tightened on that as well. Now, truck drivers moving goods such autos and vehicles must keep a log of the number of hours they have operated the truck with a 24-hour duration. There is a list of equipment that a driver must have inside the truck by law and all truck drivers must obey all these requirements.
7.
Packing Personal Belongings within Vehicle: Many people would like to pack up household items and personal belongings to ship with their vehicle. If you are paying for the shipping service, why not get as much out of it as possible? This is prohibited by law and drivers could face a $10,000 fine if found in violation and the vehicle in question could be impounded. Drivers are subject to inspection by police at every state line. Besides household items, there are other things are not allowed such as any item that is illegal, all firearms, and all hazardous materials. Ask your auto transport company in advance for any detailed list of banned items they may have. That extra quart of motor oil you like to keep in the trunk may not be allowed in addition to the weigh station checks.
